Albert’s Religion Due Tues. night March 24 This assignment is to be written from the perspective of someone who believes that there is something outside the time-space box, i.e. that life has an ultimate dimension, some sort of meaning. Here are some more ideas for you to consider writing about. You may have your own ideas as well. You may write on any topic that touches “the spiritual dimension of the present pandemic.” So, you might reflect on: Describe how the idea of “mystery” enters into the spiritual perspective. How Jesus might expect me to act toward others during this crisis? From a faith perspective, what's the connection between the suffering of Jesus and our suffering? (Our sharing in Christ’s redemptive suffering) What does the crucifixion tell us about God? Doesn’t it make God look pretty bad? (See textbook pg. 211-212)
06 Due THURSDAY NIGHT March 26 Revise essay: "The Coronavirus pandemic and God," written from the perspective of Jesus' idea of God as an infinitely loving "abba." You can't "blame" the virus on God or asy that God is punishing us through this tragedy. So what can you say? 120 Words.

NAME: _______________________ Date: April___ 2020
Write an essay developing the idea that the short story “Walter” on sheet #1005 is an Easter story. Write in paragraph form (typed would be best), using all six of the points given below labeled (a) through (f) in developing your essay.
Parag. 3 “God took on our human flesh, becoming one of us -- in the person of Jesus Christ -- precisely to destroy the power of death by dying on the cross, and then, by his rising from the grave, gave us eternal life”.
(a) How might the story of Walter be said to reflect the content of Parag. 3 above? (b) In what sense might you say Walter is “dead?” (c) What events in his life “destroy the power of death?” (d) Describe the transformation in Walter in terms of observable behavior. (e) The punchline of the story, “What, no hug?” leaves the author “dumbfounded.” Describe how the writer must have felt and thought at the moment that Walter asked for a hug. (f) According to what you learned about the “Paschal Mystery” in class today, what makes this an “Easter story?”
Extra Credit (especially if you are looking for an A in this course) Reflection Question Love, as Walter found out, can transform a person. Have you experienced the grace of transformation in your life, or seen it in someone you know? If so, did the transformation require any action on your part (or the part of the person being transformed), or was it simply a gift?
10 EASTER BREAK RELIGION PROJECT #1 Due Friday April 10, 11:00 p.m,.
This assignment should be typewritten. 150 words minimum
Subject: An interior monologue of one of the apostles as he stands on the mountain top and watches Jesus being taken up into a cloud at the “Ascension” (See Luke 24 :50-53). What is this man feeling and thinking? He’s been following Jesus for three years and has come to depend on him for …. (direction? Support? etc.?) Think of His miracles and parables. This apostle has left his former life behind (fisherman perhaps?) to follow Jesus, so what does he do now? Don’t forget a variety of emotions -- there should be several all piled up on eachother. Remember, he is a faithful apostle who has rejoiced in seeing the risen Jesus and now suddenly everything seems to be coming apart again! HINT: Try to imagine what it was like to be a disciple, walking with Christ every day and listening to him and watching his miracles. What was your relationship like with this extraordinary human being? Then it all starts to come apart.

19. DUE BEFORE CLASS ON FRIDAY MAY 15 #1113Paul's Description of Love 1 Corinthians 13: 1-13If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant 5or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. 7It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. 9For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; 10but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. 11When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. 12For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.
Assignment: After reading the above passage slowly and carefully, write a reflection on your own experience during the last two months. 21. Prepare for in-Class on FRIDAY MAY 22 Review Sheet (Below) Question #1. FINAL “EXAM” REVIEWReligion 10 Fr. Albert The purpose of this exam is to let you demonstrate how much you've understood of the course material, especially your ability to apply that knowledge in reading, interpreting and applying New Testament texts.
In a few sentences define “EXPLANATION,” “MEANING” and “Time-Space Box.” Using examples from scriptures show how these concepts help us to read the Scriptures intelligently. What would be the atheist’s position on “meaning” and the T.S.B.?
Given a scripture text, show what the text reveals about Jesus’ “dream” of the KINGDOM OF GOD, with particular emphasis on the Jewish notion of love of neighbor as contrasted with Jesus’ own teaching, and the Jewish dream of a messiah-liberator.
Given a piece of writing (biblical or non-biblical) analyze it in terms of the contrasting SEMITIC and GREEK approaches to the world and to communication.
Analyse a piece of writing in terms of how it is or is not a PARABLE.Use the eight characteristics of a parable.
Given a passage from the PASSION NARRATIVES (e.g. the role of Pilate, Jesus’ last words) show that you understand the background and motivations involved.
SAINT PAUL. (a) Analyze in a few paragraphs the world in which Saint Paul operated. Answers should be typed into this document. (Screen shots of any handwritten tests must be bright and clear.)
You may use your own notes, but no one else’s notes. Do not use any other sources such as internet or books (the correct answers are in your notes, not in cyberspace).
This open-notebook test requires answers that are more detailed than on a closed-book test. “Correct” answers are assumed! For a B or an A you must organize your responses well and use details and examples to fill out the answer. Outline your answer in a rough draft first, using topic sentences and supporting ideas -- don’t just “wing it.”
The completed test is to be emailed to Fr Albert in the usual fashion before 8:50 A.M.on Friday June 5 (Before exam period starts).
IMPORTANT: An exam mailed after 8:50 on Friday will not be accepted.
You may submit it early, but once it is submitted, you cannot submit it again or make corrections.
Be sure your name is on the test, and that you have signed the Honor Code statement.
FINAL EXAMReligion 10Fr. Albert Name: ______________________
I. Time Space Box A young wife, four months pregnant, has just been informed that her 28 year-old husband has terminal cancer. She asks her priest “Why is this happening to us? We had our whole lives ahead of us. We were so happy! Why? I don’t understand!” The priest says “Well, let me help you understand a little. This particular cancer has to do with a breakdown in the RNA in the 24th pair of genes in the DNA helix. The configuration of the amino acids gets reversed, triggering the uncontrolled growth of the cells” Use the concepts “explanation” and “meaning” in analyzing this situation: what is the wife really asking? Does the priest understand?
II How to read a Biblical Passage Let’s say that a friend of yours comes to you with this problem: “The Gospel of Matthew says that the star the magi were following “came to a stop over the place where Jesus was.” How can that be? If a star stopped in the heavens, that would mean that the earth had suddenly stopped rotating on its axis and stood still. The moment this happened our planet would be torn to pieces by gravitational forces. This is plain elementary physics. So this is just a lot of baloney! Respond to his analysis of the passage in question by offering him the approach we have been using in class, including concepts of “explanation,” “meaning,” “time-space Box,” kinds of literature, etc. This is the most important question on the test, so be thorough.
III GREEK versus SEMITIC Thinking Bailey High’s boys’ basketball team was the defending Kansas state champ team, enjoying a winning streak of 89 games. But on Feb. 15, 1985, a team from tiny Quinter High (record 8-5 so far that year) called time out with two seconds left on the clock. The score was tied, and Quinter would put the ball in bounds. The 6’5” center for Quinter threw the ball in bounds from mid-court to a teammate who was waiting under the basket. The teammate caught the pass and immediately banked in a shot at the buzzer to win the biggest upset in the history of Kansas high school basketball.
(a) What factors make this article characteristic of the “Greek” approach?
(b) What different factors would have to be used instead to retell the story in a “Semitic” style?
(c) Explain in three sentences minimum why the distinction between Greek and Semitic thinking is necessary when reading the Bible. Give an example.
IV Jesus’ DREAM OF THE KINGDOM Answer the following questions completely: (a) How did Jesus’ idea of the Kingdom of God differ from the Jewish notion of the Kingdom of God?
(b) Describe the Jewish understanding of the command “Love your neighbor” Give a thorough analysis of their ideas about the obligation toward others.
(c) By contrast what was Christ’s ideal of “love your neighbor?”
VPILATE’S DILEMMA a) state clearly the dilemma of Pontius Pilate during the trial of Jesus.
b) How did he resolve (end) the dilemma?
VI SAINT PAUL The more details the better in the following responses! a. Describe with some details the city of Tarsus where he was born and raised. What influence might growing up in this city have had on the young Paul?
b. Describe in some detail each of his two educations: 1.) His Jewish education as a child and later as a young adult.
2.) His Greek education in Tarsus
c. How did these two sides of Paul/Saul (his Greek side and his Jewish side) combine to make him the perfect missionary for Christianity? Make sure your answer is clear and complete.
